Flyers win in sudden death, advance to Ultimate Final Four

Jon Nethercutt and Noah Saul hooked up on a give-and-go for the game-winning goal in sudden death as the Raleigh Flyers beat the Jacksonville Cannons 28-27 late Saturday at WakeMed Soccer Park.

The playoff victory sends the Southern Division champion Flyers to San Jose, where they will play in the AUDL Final Four on Aug. 8-9.

The Flyers, who trailed 5-1 in a sport that favors offense and matching scores, forced overtime when Jack Williams dived to catch a throw in the end zone with 2.3 seconds left. The Flyers started that tying possession with 10 seconds left.

Both teams scored four goals in overtime, forcing the sudden death. Nethercutt’s winning goal in gave Raleigh its first lead since 1-0.
