LIV Golf CEO Makes Promise To Employees Amid Rumors
Rumors circulated this week that the LIV Golf tour might shut down amid reports that the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund (PIF) would be withdrawing funding. But LIV's CEO is making it clear that nothing is changing.
In an email to staff this week, LIV CEO Scott O'Neil stated that the 2026 season will continue "exactly as planned" with no interruptions or changes in momentum. He dismissed the media speculation and compared their situation to "the life of a startup" with moments of pressure.
"I want to be crystal clear: Our season continues exactly as planned, uninterrupted and at full throttle," O'Neil wrote. "While the media landscape is often filled with speculation, our reality is defined by the work we do on the grass. We are heading into the heart of our 2026 schedule with the full energy of an organization that is bigger, louder, and more influential than ever before.
"The life of a startup movement is often defined by these moments of pressure. We signed up for this because we believe in disrupting the status quo. We have faced headwinds since the jump, and we've answered every time with resilience and grace. Now, we answer by doing what we do best: putting on the most compelling show in sports."
Problems with the Statement
While the statement does seem to directly contradict the rumors that LIV Golf would be shutting its doors within days, many golf fans parsed the language and realized that it doesn't really address the long-term future of the company or its financial viability beyond the next few months.
"I for one never thought the 2026 season would end early. So this isn't surprising but also doesn't address anything further beyond this season," one user remarked on X.
"Note that he's not saying anything at all about the funding. He's just saying they're going to continue this season. Nothing about the future, nothing about the reason for the rumors," another noted.
"Sounds like somone whos dumbing buckets of watter out of a sinking ship. Feels like its 2026 and thats it for LIV," a third said.
LIV Golf emerged several years ago as an alternative and challenger to the PGA Tour, paying ungodly sums of money to some of the world's top golfers.
But as more and more of the golfers trickle away from the organization and return to the PGA Tour, its status as a true challenger diminishes.
Now with these persistent reports that the funding may soon dry up, the organization's entire future seems to be up in the air - regardless of what the CEO says.
