Wings Shut Down Azzi Fudd and Paige Bueckers Dating Question

Earlier this week, the Dallas Wings drafted Azzi Fudd with the No. 1 overall pick, making it clear that they considered her the best available player at the top spot.

The narrative became familiar that she reunites with her former UConn Huskies teammate, Paige Bueckers, whom the Wings selected first overall in the previous draft. Many believe this pairing will be immensely valuable to the Wings, as Bueckers and Fudd have developed chemistry on the court over several seasons under Geno Auriemma.

There was also the ongoing belief that Bueckers and Fudd were in a relationship, as Bueckers previously mentioned on social media, and they appeared together at various public events. That belief seemingly continued into the WNBA Draft, but it’s become less clear recently, or at least off limits for discussion.

Since going first overall in the draft, Fudd has participated in numerous interviews and press conferences. The most recent media session was an introductory press conference on Thursday following Fudd’s arrival in Texas.

A bold reporter mentioned that Bueckers said on TikTok last year that she and Fudd were a couple. He asked if they were still together and, if so, whether they consulted with other couples in the league about “how they negotiate that dynamic.”

Fudd didn’t have much time to respond, or didn’t want to, and a Wings media team member quickly offered a statement regarding those questions.

“I understand why you have to ask that question, but we’re gonna respectfully decline from commenting on any of our players’ personal lives. So, next question,” the media team member said.

That interaction arrives just days after a Zoom media availability session featuring Wings general manager Curt Miller and head coach Jose Fernandez. Questions about the pairing of Fudd and Bueckers came up, with nothing mentioned about a relationship at the time.

Instead, Miller said he wanted to keep the focus on Fudd, whom they just drafted. However, he and Fernandez spoke highly of their development under Auriemma at UConn and of winning a championship together, which they said will make them a “good fit” for the Wings.

Some speculate that Fudd went first overall because she’s dating Bueckers, who influenced the Wings’ draft decision, but the team has maintained it was more about selecting the best option with that No. 1 pick.

“We traveled all over the world watching this incredible draft class, but it came back always to Azzi,” Miller told reporters.

While the reporter’s question was valid, it seems questions about Bueckers and Fudd’s relationship status will never end, unless they put an end to them. Even though they’re professionals at their sport, one can’t discount how relationship drama could disrupt two teammates and the rest of their team’s success.
