NFL Quarterback Holding Out for New Extension Before Draft

Arizona Cardinals quarterback Jacoby Brissett is holding out for a new contract.

NFL insider Ian Rapoport revealed Brissett is not attending Phase 1 of the team’s offseason program as he looks for a new contract. Set to make $9.06M in this season, Brissett, has only $1.5M in guaranteed money and wants security and Rapoport suggested the Cardinals are willing to address it.

The holdout comes just a day after general manager Monti Ossenfort refused to name a starting quarterback.

“Listen, we got Jacoby, Gardner — they both played a lot of ball,” he said. “You know, I think, as we sit here today, we’re trying to install a system. You guys (coach Matt LaFleur’s staff) are rolling. You know, I’ll defer to you on that, but we’re not really naming anybody, and we’ll see how that room looks by the time we get in August.”

The news also comes on the heels of ESPN’s Adam Schefter reporting the Cardinals are interested in former Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson.

"It certainly feels like there's a lot of smoke around the Arizona Cardinals," Schefter said on NFL Live on Thursday. "I think the Los Angeles Rams would have had some interest in Ty Simpson if they had two first round picks, which they don't. And where was Mike LaFleur before he took the Cardinals head coaching job? Los Angeles with the Rams."

He suggested the team could trade up into the back of the first round in an attempt to lock up Simpson with a five-year rookie deal, something only offered to first-round picks.

"It depends on how much they like him, but there is a feeling around the league that the Cardinals certainly have some level of interest in Ty Simpson. We'll find out exactly how much that is one week from tonight,” Schefter added.

The first round of the NFL draft kicks off on Thursday, April 23.
