Rams' Matthew Stafford Contract Situation Receives Insider Update
The Los Angeles Rams were on the verge of returning to the Super Bowl, thanks to standout play from their quarterback, Matthew Stafford, last season.
Unfortunately, an NFC Championship Game loss to Sam Darnold and the Seattle Seahawks prevented them from reaching that goal. Stafford’s NFL season culminated in his winning the league’s Most Valuable Player award for his performance.
At 38, some thought he might opt for retirement, having already won the Super Bowl along with NFL MVP and other accolades in his impressive career. However, that was not in the books for Stafford, as he’s now in contract negotiations with the Rams during the offseason.
On Monday, NFL insider Ian Rapoport reported that Stafford and the Rams “have made significant progress” in their contract extension discussions, and are expected to bring the Rams QB back for next season.

A current Spotrac report reveals that Stafford has a $40 million remaining contract. However, they predict that the renegotiation will bring him a two-year, $110 million deal, probably within the next several days.
That’s a great sign for the Rams to remain one of the top teams in the NFC, fully capable of winning the Super Bowl with their head coach, Sean McVay, and current roster.
They made huge moves in the offseason to further improve a roster that was already very good. However, adding cornerbacks Trent McDuffie and Jaylen Watson through trades and free agency will help their secondary immensely.
In addition, they added long snapper Joe Cardona on a two-year deal for special teams and re-signed defensive lineman Larrell Murchison.
They could further add to that talent through the NFL Draft. The Los Angeles Rams hold the No. 13 pick in the first round, and additional picks in the second, third, sixth, and seventh rounds of the big event this week.
As of this writing, sports books feel they have strong value as contenders for the Lombardi Trophy, as they’re also considered favorites at Kalshi’s prediction market, ahead of the Buffalo Bills, Kansas City Chiefs, and Seattle Seahawks.
Bringing Stafford back as the signal caller is the main goal now, and it appears to be well on track. He’s definitely deserving of a lucrative extension after throwing 388-of-597 completions for 4,707 yards and 46 touchdowns with a 71.2 QBR last season.
