Victor Wembanyama Participates in Spurs Shootaround Before Game 3
San Antonio Spurs center Victor Wembanyama suffered a head injury during the second quarter of Tuesday night’s Game 2 loss against the Portland Trail Blazers.
After smacking his chin on the floor at San Antonio’s Frost Bank Center, Wembanyama ran straight back into the Spurs’ locker room. There, the 7-foot-4 Frenchman was diagnosed with a concussion and ruled out for the remainder of the 106-103 loss.
Wembanyama is currently progressing through the NBA‘s concussion protocol, listed as questionable for Friday night’s Game 3 matchup in Portland.
There was initially some worry that Wembanyama would be unable to travel with the Spurs to Portland, but the MVP candidate was ultimately able to get on the team plane. On Friday afternoon, he took another step in the right direction - participating in the Spurs’ shootaround session at the Moda Center.
According to NBA rule, a player with a concussion must wait at least 48 hours after the injury to resume full activity. However, a concussed player may resume limited activity after 24 as long as symptoms don’t worsen.
Wembanyama participated in light cardio activity on Wednesday evening.
Friday night’s Game 3 will tipoff roughly 72 hours following Wembanyama’s concussion sustained on Tuesday.
“He looks good,” Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson said on Thursday, via ESPN. “The update is that he is following each protocol, he’s progressing, and he’ll travel with the team.”
As of Thursday, the Spurs had not ruled out the possibility of Wembanyama taking the court for Game 3.
“To my knowledge, we haven’t even had that discussion [about ruling Wembanyama out],” Johnson added. “The protocol is the protocol. The league is who’s mostly at the top of that. We’ll just hope that he continues to progress. Whenever that timing is, that’s when it will be.
“We’ll just kind of keep going through the protocol, and hopefully he continues to progress. It’s pretty straightforward. So obviously we hope he’ll be back at some point. But we’ll allow the protocol to play out. There’s nothing more important than his health.”
The Spurs and Trail Blazers - tied at 1-1 in the first-round series - will tipoff at 10:30 p.m. ET on Friday.
