Lake Norman's dominant win over rival Mooresville clinches outright conference title

BASEBALLLake Norman 12, Mooresville 2

MOORESVILLE - Lake Norman plated three runs in the first inning and that would have been enough Friday night.

Noah Jacobsen and Carson Beaver each went 2-for-3 with an RBI, and Christian Sandoval had things under control on the mound as the Wildcats (14-10, 8-2) defeated visiting Mooresville 12-2 in a marquee regular-season finale.

The win avenged the April 21 4-1 loss at Mooresville (11-13, 6-4). Coupled with South Iredell's (12-11, 7-3) 3-0 loss to Davie County (14-10, 7-3) on Friday, it also clinched the North Piedmont Conference championship outright.

Lake Norman led 7-0 after the second inning and sealed the victory with five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Sandoval pitched all five innings, holding the Blue Devils to two unearned runs on three hits and two walks. He struck out five.

Weston Woodhead doubled and drove in two runs for Lake Norman. Andres Acurero, Max McGlinn and Alex Minacapelli each provided one hit and an RBI.

Davie County 3, South Iredell 0

TROUTMAN - South Iredell's bid to claim at least a share of the North Piedmont Conference title fell short in Friday night's regular-season finale.

Davie County used five pitchers to keep the Vikings off the scoreboard in a 3-0 victory.

Eli Beekley had the Vikings' two hits. One was a double.

South Iredell pitchers Dylan Hughesman and Luke Snell didn't get the run support needed. They combined to hold the War Eagles to three runs on five hits and four walks while striking out nine. Hughesman worked 4.1 innings, fanning six and walking only one.

SOFTBALLSouth Iredell 10, Mooresville 0

MOORESVILLE - Addison Trego handled business at the plate and in the pitcher's circle as South Iredell closed the regular season with a 10-0 win Friday night at Mooresville.

Trego finished with two hits, including a home run, and four RBIs. She also pitched seven shutout innings for the win, allowing only one hit in the process. She struck out three and walked five.

The Vikings (17-6, 9-1) took the lead with a four-run third inning. They also scored four runs in the top of the seventh.

Addi Myers homered and drove in three runs. Caroline Constable was 3-for-4 with an RBI, and Keyonna Waddell and Mallory Messick supplied one hit and one RBI each against the Blue Devils (13-7, 6-4).
