Another milestone: WSSU mens golf team heading to regional play for first time in school history

Winston-Salem State has another first among its athletic programs, and this time it's the men's golf team making history.

The Rams and Coach Charles Penny are heading to the Division II men's regional for the first time. The Rams were selected as the eighth seed in the Atlantic Region and will play at Sunnehanna Country Club in Johnstown, Pennsylvania.

The regional is scheduled for May 7-9.

The Rams are among the 80 schools in the regional format with 13 of those schools playing in the regional in Pennsylvania.

The top three schools and the top two golfers not on the advancing teams will move on to the NCAA Division II Championships scheduled for May 18–22 at the Boulder Creek Golf Club in Boulder City, Nevada.

"This is a very big deal to be in this regional for the first time in school history," Penny said. "And the most important this is we have a team going and not just one or two individuals who qualified."

The Rams are one of three CIAA schools in the regional with Fayetteville State and Bluefield State also in the field.

Penny said a big part of their success this season is what an annmous donor did for the program.

"A donor was able to get us scholarship money where the kids we were recruiting had a chance to come here and play," Penny said. "That's a big part of why are doing so well and the best thing is all five starters can return next year."

The top seed in the regional is West Chester followed by Pittsburgh-Johnstown.

The Rams finished second to Fayetteville State in the CIAA Championship at Mill Creek in Mebane, but Cameron Lutterloh fired a final-round 67 to claim the individual title.

Lutterloh, a junior from Whitsett, will now lead the Rams into the regional for the first time in school history. He shot rounds of 74-71-67 to win the CIAA medalist honors.

The other starters are expected to be Godfrey Nsubuga, who tied for sixth at the CIAA championships, Tanner Frye, who finished tied for eighth, Connor Lineberry and Chase McLaughlin. Lineberry and McLaughlin both finished in the top 25 at the CIAA Championship.

Penny and assistant coach Richard Guy have directed the Rams to their best season since the program was resurrected in the fall of 2021.

Earlier this year, the WSSU women's basketball team won the school's first CIAA championship, and the women's flag football team won the first sanctioned CIAA championship in that sport.
