Dylan Cease Assigns Blame After Blue Jays' Loss to Red Sox
The Toronto Blue Jays are coming off a tough 5-0 loss to the Boston Red Sox, which puts them in fourth in the American League East Division. Pitcher Dylan Cease had a sloppy outing, allowing 4 runs on 7 hits and 3 walks with 5 strikeouts over 5.2 innings.
Despite three scoreless frames initially, he faltered in the middle innings. In an interview with Cease after Monday's loss, he had some words for himself, stating that "I didn't give us a real chance today." (h/t Ben Nicholson-Smith). This gives us a clearer picture of how he felt after his performance, and it really shows that he wants to come back from this terrible game and put on more great performances.

It seems Cease's reset has led to a mixed, yet high-potential, start with the Blue Jays. Through six starts, the 30-year-old has posted a 2.87 ERA, a 1.372 WHIP, and 49 strikeouts over 31.1 innings. It's an excellent opening stretch after joining the team last year, despite occasional inconsistency.
His elite strikeout ability remains his calling card, as he has recorded 200-plus strikeouts in five straight seasons and ranks near the top of MLB in strikeout rate and whiff percentage. His power fastball sits in the mid-to-high 90s and can touch 100 mph, while his hard, high-spin slider continues to be a dominant weapon against hitters on both sides.
Paired with Kevin Gausman, who owns a 2.57 ERA, a 0.943 WHIP, and 38 strikeouts in 35 innings over 6 games, the Blue Jays have a formidable pitching rotation.
Cease has developed into one of the premier pitchers in baseball. He was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the sixth round of the 2014 MLB Draft out of Milton High School in Milton, Georgia. Cease was traded to the Chicago White Sox in 2017 and made his MLB debut in 2019, remaining with the team through the 2023 season.
Before the 2024 season, he was traded to the San Diego Padres, then signed a seven-year, $210 million contract with the Blue Jays in November 2025.
Cease's standout seasons include a 2022 campaign in which he finished second in Cy Young Award voting and received MVP votes, as well as a strong 2024 season, finishing fourth in Cy Young voting. Overall, he has built an impressive career and continues to meet expectations.
