Pat Kelsey Strikes Again as Louisville Lands Coveted 5-Star Obinna Ekezie Jr.

Louisville basketball has enjoyed one of the most impressive roster overhauls of the offseason.

Since the end of the 2025–26 college basketball season, head coach Pat Kelsey has aggressively rebuilt Louisville through the transfer portal, stacking proven production at nearly every position.

Kansas transfer Flory Bidunga, the No. 1-ranked player in the portal, headlines the group. He's joined by Oregon guard Jackson Shelstad, Arkansas forward Karter Knox, Iowa forward Alvaro Folgueiras, and Dayton guard De'Shayne Montgomery, all four-star transfers who were being actively pursued by other top programs.

That alone would have put Louisville in the national conversation.

Now, Kelsey’s staff has just landed one of the most coveted high school prospects in America.

On Sunday, five-star center Obinna Ekezie Jr., the No. 4 overall prospect in the 2027 class, committed to Louisville and will reclassify into 2026, giving the Cardinals one of the most talented frontcourts in the country overnight.

Ekezie is a 7-foot, 220-pound center out of Southeastern Prep in Florida, widely regarded as one of the most complete big men in high school basketball.

Last year as a junior, he averaged 17.1 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 1.8 blocks across 31 games while shooting 60.2% from the field.

At the 2025 NBPA Top 100 Camp, he measured at 7-foot-1 with a 7-foot-4.5 wingspan and a 9-foot-4.5 standing reach, tools that highlight his elite long-term upside.

He's also the son of former NBA center Obinna Ekezie Sr., who played for five franchises before continuing a lengthy professional career overseas in Serbia, Italy, and Russia.

Pat Kelsey has quietly built one of the best résumés in college basketball, and now he's scaling it up at Louisville.

Across 14 seasons as a head coach at Winthrop, College of Charleston, and Louisville, Kelsey owns a 312–141 record (.689) with 11 conference championships and multiple NCAA Tournament appearances.

At Winthrop, he turned a mid-major into a perennial Big South power, winning three league titles and producing 20-win seasons like clockwork.

At Charleston, he elevated the program further, highlighted by a 31–4 season and top-25 ranking, while winning back-to-back conference titles.

At Louisville, he aggressively used the transfer portal to flip the roster and deliver an immediate 27-win, ACC-contending team in year one.

Last season, his Cardinals finished 24-11 and were ranked as high as No. 6 overall in the AP poll, reaching the NCAA Tournament in each of his first two seasons as the head coach.

The program's blend of proven transfers and elite recruits positions Louisville as an immediate contender in 2026, and, more importantly, deep enough to stay in contention for years to come.
