Longtime ESPN Host Arda Ocal Let Go After 10 Years
A longtime ESPN host has been suddenly let go after 10 years of employment on Wednesday, May 6.
ESPN has had a handful of prominent layoffs in recent years. Several big names, from Danny Kanell to David Pollack to Jeff Van Gundy to Mark Jackson, have been ousted from their roles at the Worldwide Leader in Sports over the years. ESPN hasn't had widespread layoffs in a while - however some might be coming - though it appears that the Disney-owned company is still making moves.
Wednesday morning, longtime ESPN host Arda Ocal announced that he had been suddenly let go by the company.
"I got let go from ESPN this morning. It's all good, I'll be fine. 10 years is a decent run. I think I'm just gonna take some time off before I decide what's next. Good vibes and acts of kindness," he announced.
Ocal was best known for his NHL coverage. He served as the host of The Drop - ESPN's live digital pregame show that aired on ESPN's app and social platforms, after launching in 2021 - while also hosting ESPN's NHL studio coverage.
The longtime ESPN host also worked on "SportsCenter," "SportsNation" and other programs.
Hockey fans are particularly saddened by his ousting
Fans are taking to social media to weigh in on his departure.
"Gutted for you and shocked by the news. You are too good not to land something quickly," one wrote.
"Thanks for always being a great teammate❤️," his now-former ESPN coworker, Emily Kaplan, shared.
"Sorry to hear that Arda. Sending good vibes your way," one added.
ESPN host Kevin Neghandi added: "Oh man. I'm so sorry to hear this Arda. Enjoyed our time together. It was always a pleasure. Good things are ahead."
Ocal says that he plans on taking some time off before deciding what's next in his career. We wish him the best moving forward.
