Cubs Star Matthew Boyd Suffers 'Freak' Injury With His Children

Matthew Boyd, the opening day starter for the Chicago Cubs, is going to be out for a while.

The 35-year-old left-handed pitcher suffered a serious knee injury on Wednesday morning, May 6. Boyd suffered a tear in his meniscus. Unfortunately, to add insult to injury, Boyd suffered the injury while playing around with his children.

Boyd is set to undergo surgery and it's unclear when he will return. A timetable for his recovery will be set following the procedure.

Cubs sideline reporter Taylor McGregor shared the devastating news to the Chicago fan base on Wednesday.

"Matthew Boyd is getting surgery on his meniscus. Will be out for the foreseeable future," she reported.

"The injury happened this morning playing with his kids. They won't know timeline until after surgery."

Boyd, who is in his second season with the Cubs, went 14-8 with a 3.21 ERA last season. He accumulated an impressive 2.6 WAR (wins above replacement).

The veteran left-hander is off to a slower start this year. He has a 6.00 ERA through five starts. However, his underlying metrics are still strong.

Unfortunately, Boyd is going to be out for a while, following the crushing injury suffered with his children.

The Cubs have been one of the best teams in baseball

Chicago is 24-12 and in first place in the NL Central Division. This is a clear setback for the National League contenders, though.

However, the Cubs have been riding a strong offense, led by Nico Hoerner, Ian Happ and Seiya Suzuki, while ranking eighth in all of baseball, with a team ERA of 3.83.

The Cubs are currently taking on the Cincinnati Reds. Chicago is going for its eighth straight win on Wednesday night. First pitch is scheduled for 7:40 p.m. E.T.
