Bad weather ends first round of Charlotte’s PGA event early. What that means for Friday
The horn has sounded at Quail Hollow.
The first round of the Truist Championship was suspended at 7:10 p.m. due to inclement weather, the PGA Tour announced on Thursday. The early conclusion arrived once rain, wind and thunder tormented the normally idyllic course in Charlotte — and it stranded 20 of 72 golfers on the course as darkness approached.
Those 20 will wrap up their first round on Friday, starting at 10:30 a.m. The second round will begin as previously scheduled at 11 a.m. All entry gates are scheduled to open at 8 a.m. Friday for ticketed spectators. Hospitality venues will open at 10 a.m. The tournament advised fans to be aware of the conditions.
“Fans should note that conditions on the property may be wet,” it said in a statement. “All fans should dress accordingly and be mindful of areas where water has accumulated, as well as mounding and hills, which might be slippery.”
This was merely the latest turn of events of a weather-influenced day in Charlotte. Golfers played in groups of three — as opposed to pairs — and started at 12:30 p.m. instead of just past 7:45 a.m. The last group of the day went out at 2:31 p.m.
Preferred lies were in effect for the first round because of the conditions of the wet course, too.
Because of the smaller field, the Truist this year is a no-cut tournament, so all 72 golfers will advance to the weekend after the first two rounds. At the conclusion of Thursday, Matt McCarty led the way with an 8-under-par 63 (he finished his round), with Sungjae Im right behind him at minus-7 (he’s on his final hole). Five others are tied at minus-5.
