Browns' KC Concepcion Draws Zay Flowers Comparison Ahead of Rookie Season

The Cleveland Browns spent the entire pre-draft process wrapped in quarterback smoke screens, offensive line projections, and speculation about whether a franchise coming off a brutal 5-12 season would swing for a headline-grabbing rebuild or try to fast-track contention under new head coach Todd Monken.

Mock drafts had Cleveland linked to everything from a developmental quarterback to defensive reinforcements. Instead, the Browns quietly built one of the more aggressive offensive-minded draft classes in the league.

First came Utah tackle Spencer Fano to stabilize protection. Then came the move that is suddenly looking far more important than many realized on draft night, selecting Texas A&M wide receiver KC Concepcion with the No. 24 overall pick.

Now, just weeks after the 2026 NFL draft, the conversation around Concepcion has shifted from "interesting weapon" to potential offensive centerpiece.

In ESPN's breakdown of the best rookie-team fits from the draft, analyst Matt Bowen projected Concepcion into a role similar to the one Zay Flowers thrived in under Monken with the Baltimore Ravens.

Bowen described Concepcion as a "high-volume target" capable of generating explosive plays through separation, quickness, and schemed touches.

“An extremely sudden mover, Concepcion has the stop-and-start speed to create easy separation out of the slot. Plus, he can use that foot quickness to evade press coverage. Monken can also scheme for Concepcion on manufactured touches, getting him the ball on screens, fly sweeps or backfield alignments. He should be a high-volume target with the ability to generate explosive plays,” Bowen wrote.

Monken's offenses historically funnel touches toward dynamic slot playmakers.

Flowers became one of the NFL's most dangerous underneath weapons in Baltimore, piling up 858 yards and five touchdowns on 77 catches as a rookie, before posting consecutive 1,000-yard seasons each of the past two years in Monken’s system.

Flowers quickly lived up to the first-round hype, delivering high-end production through motion concepts, screens, crossers, and yards-after-catch opportunities.

Much like Flowers in Baltimore, Cleveland did not draft Concepcion merely to stretch the field occasionally. The Browns appear to view him as a weekly engine piece.

As a freshman at NC State in 2023, Concepcion posted 71 catches for 839 yards (both program freshman records) and 10 touchdowns while adding 320 rushing yards.

His versatility turned him into one of the ACC's toughest matchup problems before transferring to Texas A&M in 2025, where he elevated his draft stock even further, playing against SEC competition.

As the focal point of the Aggies offense, Concepcion recorded 61 receptions for 919 yards and nine touchdowns while also contributing as a returner and gadget weapon.

He was a consensus All-American, earned first-team All-SEC honors as a receiver, all-purpose player, and return specialist, and won the Paul Hornung Award, given annually to the nation's most versatile player.

At 5-foot-11 and 190 pounds, Concepcion is built similarly to Flowers (5-foot-9, 183 pounds), but the stylistic overlap is what stands out most.

The fit in Cleveland also looks unusually clean.

The Browns lacked explosiveness in 2025, and Monken inherited an offense desperate for easier completions and manufactured production.

Concepcion changes that equation immediately. He can line up in the slot, motion into the backfield, return punts, and create cheap yardage on touches that do not require perfect quarterback play.

That last point is critical.

Cleveland's quarterback situation remains one of the NFL's biggest storylines entering 2026, with Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders still battling for QB1.

Regardless of who the Browns have under center, a player like Concepcion becomes a reliable security blanket and has a legitimate path to leading all rookie receivers in targets.
