Top-seeded Wake Forest rolls in mens tennis Super Regional
Top-seeded and defending national champions Wake Forest beat Central Florida 4-1 in the Super Regional at the Wake Forest Tennis Center on Friday night.
The win for the Demon Deacons, who are 33-3 this season, moved them to the quarterfinals against either Oklahoma or Arizona. The match between those two schools will be played on Saturday afternoon.
The quarterfinals (May 14), semifinals (May 16) and championship match (May 17) will be played at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Georgia.
The win at home on Friday gave the Demon Deacons a streak of 49 straight wins at home, a stretch that goes back to April of 2024.
Coach Tony Bresky's team is trying to win their third NCAA championship since 2018.
"Once again, we had an awesome crowd; the boys love playing at home," Bresky said. "We knew they'd be fired up. Credit to UCF, they had a great year, and they have a great team. We just did a great job on our home courts. We're tough to beat here."
The Demon Deacons, as they've done all season long, got the lead thanks to a great performance in doubles. Mees Rottgering and Kacper Szymkowiak teamed up to beat Luca Hotze and Nicolas Oliveria easily 6-2.
They wrapped up the point to take a 1-0 lead when Luca Pow and Aryan Shah rolled to a 6-0 win.
Shah picked up the first point in singles for the Demon Deacons with a convincing 6-0, 6-3 win over Oliveira. That gave the Demon Deacons a 2-0 lead.
Rottgering, the ACC freshman of the year, and Pow closed out the match with singles victories.
The match took just a little over two hours.
"We're looking forward to the quarterfinals, obviously whoever we play will be the one of the elites," Bresky said. "We get to rest up, take a couple of days and then go to battle."
