Dudley wins girls regional on last race and other track regionals results
TeQuille Jackson had never lost a regional track and field meet as a coach for the Dudley girls team, but the streak was in jeopardy at the regional meet.
Trailing Ragsdale, 130-124, in the 6A Central regional with one event to go, sophomore Amber Williams, who earlier won both hurdles events, anchored the Lady Panthers' second place 4x400 relay to earn the last eight points to keep Jackson's record unblemished and complete a boys-girls sweep at Asheboro.
"It's crazy," Williams said. "We came out here, we had a mission, he (Jackson) told us what to do; all we had to do was succeed. We got the training, we knew that we could do it, we just had to have the mindset and for us to be able to come out here and do that with so much pressure on our backs and us being able to get it done, I just feel like that was really good. We completed the mission, you know?"
The Dudley girls won five events and finished in the top five 18 times to reach 132 points to runner-up Ragsdale's 130. In addition to Williams' hurdles sweep, junior Kymari Barham won both throwing competitions.
Ragsdale, the 6A indoor state runner-up, had six wins and 13 top threes. Freshman Taraji Jordan won the long jump and finished second in both the 100 and 200 meters, while sophomore Elle Dawson won the 1600 and 3200-meters.
The Tigers had each of the top three finishers in the 1600.
"The biggest takeaway, of course, is that it's a little more heartbreaking when it comes down to this," Ragsdale coach Simeon Platt said. "We left some points on the board in a couple of our events that hopefully next week in states we can make up, but we are going to fight. We'll be at states and we'll represent well, so of course, we are not mad at the girls or we're not sad about it. We would like to get the victories when we can get them, but we are still going to fight."
Dudley's boys won much more handily, scoring 145 points to runner-up Asheboro's 81.5. Southeast Guilford was a close third with 76 points. Jackson breathed a lot easier.
"My boys really got the job done today. They do a really good job of working together," Jackson said. "When you talk about a group of boys that really believe in brotherhood and that really pick each other up when they are down, they do that to a T. My captain, Kamaal Ryan, does a really good job of leading the group and making sure they are on top of things, while also uplifting his teammates and making sure they are confident and ready to go in the race."
