Giannis Antetokounmpo Landing Spots: Top Trade Destinations for Former Finals MVP

The Giannis Antetokounmpo trade conversation is no longer background noise. According to ESPN's Shams Charania, the Milwaukee Bucks are now open to fielding offers for their franchise cornerstone as the NBA Draft Combine draws closer and the draft itself sits roughly six weeks out.

Sunday's lottery may have been the starting gun on what shapes up to be one of the most consequential offseasons the league has seen in years.

Antetokounmpo has spent all 13 of his NBA seasons in Milwaukee, owns just about every major record in franchise history and delivered the organization its first title in 50 years back in 2021. He's 31 now and dealt with groin, calf and knee issues that held him to 36 games this season but still averaged 27.6 points, 9.8 rebounds and 5.4 assists.

If the Bucks move forward with trade talks, expect the interest around the league to be serious and fast. Here are five teams that could emerge as the top trade destinations.

Golden State Warriors

Golden State hasn't let go of the idea of pairing Giannis Antetokounmpo with Stephen Curry, and the front office reportedly still views it as an appealing long-term move as Curry gets deeper into his career. The Warriors hold the No. 11 pick in the upcoming draft, which figured into earlier conversations around Antetokounmpo before February's deadline.

The franchise also has real roster concerns to address. Golden State finished with 37 wins this season. They're also expected to be without Jimmy Butler and Moses Moody for a significant stretch next year, which makes adding a player of Giannis's caliber even more urgent.

Miami Heat

Missing the playoffs for the first time since 2019 put things in perspective for the Miami Heat. Pat Riley made clear at his end-of-season session that the organization plans to be aggressive this offseason with building around Bam Adebayo.

Miami was tied to Antetokounmpo heavily before the trade deadline, though Milwaukee didn't engage on a deal at that point. The Heat hold the No. 13 pick in the 2026 draft but there's an awareness internally that their offer may not stack up against what stronger asset teams can put on the table.

Boston Celtics

Boston was among the teams keeping tabs on Antetokounmpo ahead of the February deadline, per Charania, joining a group that included the Los Angeles Lakers, New York Knicks, Cleveland Cavaliers and Minnesota Timberwolves. The Celtics are already out of the postseason and playoff disappointment could push them toward a more aggressive approach this summer.

The financial side complicates things, though. Antetokounmpo is set to earn $58.5 million next season, the same figure as Jayson Tatum, while Jaylen Brown is slated for $57.1 million. Any deal that brings Giannis to Boston would almost certainly require significant roster reconstruction.

Minnesota Timberwolves

Minnesota is locked into a second-round series against the San Antonio Spurs, with the matchup sitting at 2-2, but trade speculation is already building around the franchise. The Timberwolves were among the teams connected to Antetokounmpo before this year's deadline.

Adding a player of his caliber alongside Anthony Edwards would shift the entire conversation about Minnesota's ceiling in the West. That kind of move would also come with difficult decisions about the players who carried the team through this postseason run.

New York Knicks

New York remains focused on winning but league executives are reportedly expecting the Bucks to revisit trade discussions around Antetokounmpo this summer and the Knicks are viewed as a potential player in that race. The challenge for New York is asset depth.

The Knicks hold second-round picks at No. 31 and No. 55 this year along with future pick swaps but their first-round selection at No. 24 is off the table in trades due to the NBA's Stepien Rule. Compared to other teams in the mix their trade package figures to be thinner.
