Greensboro Day wins, Northern gets medalist in golf state championships
Greensboro Day won the 2026 NCISAA 3A boys golf state championship for its third state title in four years under coach Jonathan Clapp.
The Bengals, who defeated Cape Fear Academy by 24 strokes at Bryan Park, now has six state championships. They broke a 30-year title drought with Clapp's first title in 2023.
It won this year's two-round championship on Tuesday with 17-over-par 593, with Cape Fear Academy next at 617. Leading the Bengals were junior Griffin Williams' 2-under par performance, followed by freshman Jack Strickland at 1-over and senior Zachary Prescott at 7-over.
NCHSAA boys golf state championships were held on Monday and Tuesday, with eight 36-hole championships being played at four sites across the state.
In the 6A tournament, freshman Jack Weston became Northern Guilford's first-ever individual champion and the area's first NCHSAA boys individual medalist since Drew Younts of Northwest Guilford won the 4A state title at Pinehurst No. 6 in 2006.
Weston won the title by one shot over Terry Sanford senior Charlie Horne, the first-round leader, with a 5-under 67 in round one and a 1-under 71 in round two. He trailed Horne by one shot entering the final round.
Northern team finished third at 600, 42 shots behind champion Terry Sanford, which had four players finish in the top five. Its 558 total broke the association's 36-hole state championship scoring record of 562 set two years ago by Pinecrest at Pinehurst No. 9.
