Jack Eichel Fires Back at Mitch Marner Critics Amid 2026 NHL Playoffs

Mitch Marner's playoff resurgence with the Vegas Golden Knights has gained another strong supporter inside the locker room.

After Vegas eliminated the Anaheim Ducks with a 5-1 win in Game 6 on Thursday night, Jack Eichel openly defended Marner against the criticism that followed him throughout his Toronto years.

Marner delivered another dominant performance in the clincher, scoring a highlight-reel goal just 1:02 into the game before adding a shorthanded assist and finishing plus-2. The winger recorded four multi-point games during the second round and closed the Ducks series with five goals and six assists in six games, including a hat trick.

Speaking during the game 6, Eichel praised both Marner's talent and his response to years of playoff scrutiny.

"Well, I mean, he's a game breaker, right? You saw it in that series," Eichel told the on-ice reporter. "He was the best player in that series. And, I mean, he comes out here – in the beginning of the first period, makes two incredible plays, and all of a sudden we're playing with the lead, right? I mean, that helps.

"But Mitch has been incredible. I mean, from day one in training camp, his personality has gelled really well with the team. Obviously, his play is incredible, and he's on a pretty special run right now. So, it's been a lot of fun to watch. But, so happy for him. I feel like he's had a lot of critics, and I feel like he's shutting a lot of people up right now, and I'm super happy for him."

Overall, Marner now leads the 2026 Stanley Cup playoffs with 18 points in 12 games. His production has become one of the driving forces behind Vegas' run to the Western Conference Final against the Colorado Avalanche.

The numbers support Eichel's argument. Marner already has seven playoff goals after scoring only 13 across 70 postseason games with the Toronto Maple Leafs. He also ranks among the postseason leaders in high-danger goals while driving Vegas' transition game and penalty kill.

The change in environment has clearly helped. Vegas offers structure, veteran depth and far less outside noise than Toronto. Under coach John Tortorella, Marner has played freer and faster without carrying every expectation alone.

Now comes the biggest test yet against Nathan MacKinnon and Colorado.
