Maddison Davis, Ashlee Worrell of Atkins win two state titles apiece at NCHSAA 5-A track championships

Maddison Davis and Ashlee Worrell of Atkins won two state titles apiece at NCHSAA Class 5A track and field state championships on Friday at the Marcus T. Johnson track at N.C. A&T in Greensboro.

Davis, a junior, swept her way to a double-dose of state championships for the second-straight year, winning the shot put and discus, which she also accomplished last year in the Class 3A state meet.

She has also won two straight indoor state titles in the shot put.

Her throw of 41 feet, 2.75 inches won the shot put on Friday, and she followed that with a dominant win in the discus with a throw of 156 feet, 10 inches, well ahead of second place (120-9).

Worrell added to her collection of state titles after winning the long jump (19 feet, 2.5 inches) and running the anchor leg on the Camels' 4x100 relay team that finished in 48.48 seconds to edge Northeast Guilford (48.85) for the state title, joining teammates Samara Gourdine, Onyi Ezeigbo, and Jurnee Marable.

Worrell, a sophomore, won the long jump in the Class 5A indoor state meet in February.

She also had a runner-up finish as the anchor leg of the 4x200 along with Ezeigbo, Gourdine, and Amy Niang.

Ezeigbo finished third in the 100 and was fifth in the 200, and Paige Kiesling posted two top-10 finishes in the 1600 (fifth) and 800 (sixth) to help Atkins finish third in the team standings with 65, 12 back of North Lincoln, the state champions.

In the Class 5A boys state championship, Markes Hardin won the 110 hurdles and finished fifth in the 300 hurdles to help Oak Grove to a runner-up finish for the team title.

Hardin was also selected as one of the Farm Bureau Sportsmanship Award winners.

Hunter Creech finished second in the 800 and ran the anchor leg on the winning 4x800 relay team, which beat Atkins by more than eight seconds.

Luke Vannoy, who finished second in the 3200 for the Grizzlies, joined Creech, Aidan Edwards and Mason Moore on the 4x800 state-championship team.

The Atkins boys posted two runner-up finishes in the 4x200 relay and the 4x800 relay.

Drew Puryear, Adric Canty, Chris Moore and Evan Hamilton ran on the 4x200 relay and Puryear, Nicholas Whittington, Leo Couthune and Jackson Barb made up the 4x800 team.
