Uncharted Territory: Historic run continues for Iredell's last remaining playoff team

TROUTMAN - South Iredell's softball team is two victories away from a chance to play for its first state championship.

The Vikings (22-6), seeded second in the West, defeated No. 3 seed East Forsyth (21-8) in the fourth round of the 7A state playoffs Friday night, 2-0.

With the victory, they now have as many playoff wins in one season - three - as they had in all previous seasons combined.

More importantly, the Vikings advanced to the 7A West Region finals.

The Vikings broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth inning when they plated a pair of runs.

Junior Julianna Figat went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, and winning pitcher Addison Trego tossed seven shutout innings.

Trego, a junior, allowed only two hits and two walks. She struck out three.

Caroline Constable was 2-for-3, and the senior drove in a run. Senior Carsyn Benfield picked up two hits, including a double.

UP NEXT

South Iredell will face unbeaten Weddington (23-0), ranked 16th nationally by MaxPreps, in the best-of-3 7A West Regional championship series. The West top seed blanked No. 4 seed Hickory Ridge (21-7) in the fourth round Friday, 1-0.

The N.C. High School Athletic Association softball region final series are scheduled for May 19-23. The date and times of the South Iredell-Weddington series have not been announced yet.

Weddington's road to the region final series also included 5-1 and 3-0 wins over Lake Norman and Mooresville, respectively.

The West Region champion will advance to the best-of-3 7A state championship series May 27-30, where it will meet the winner of the East Region final series between Greenville's D.H Conley (23-1) and Heritage (22-2) of Wake Forest either at Duke University or UNC Greensboro.
