A night of firsts in Week 5 at Bowman Gray Stadium

It was a night of firsts at Bowman Gray Stadium on Saturday for the fifth week of the 77th season of racing.

Slate Myers, 17, became the youngest driver in the Modified Division to win a race and took a giant step toward history by becoming a fourth-generation winner in his family.

Just about every immediate family member was in Victory Lane to celebrate but Slate's grandfather, Gary, stayed on the balcony at the fieldhouse to watch. The 75-year-old doesn't get around as well as he used to.

"I wish my grandpa could be done here (in Victory Lane) with us, but this is for him," Slate said.

Also winning for the first time in her career was Jordan Atkins, who won a time-shortened nine race Street Stock race. She's battled injuries over the last two seasons that included extensive hand surgery.

The 28-year-old Mount Tabor graduate who played high-school basketball became the sixth woman in Bowman Gray Stadium history to win a race.

"I started on the pole, played defense, managed the pace, rode the clock with the time-limit format in our 20-lap feature, and somehow ended up parking it in Victory Lane," Atkins said. "God is good all the time, and all the time, God is good."

For Myers, who is in his third full season, it's taken some time for him to work his way to the front for a 25-lap race. But in the second race on Saturday, after his uncle won the first race, Slate drew the pole and knew exactly what to do with it.

Slate was never threatened on the restarts by Daniel Beeson and cruised to the family's 222nd career win. He's the 146th different driver to win a Modified race and the sixth member of the Myers' extended family to get to Victory Lane in that division.

Adding to the big night for the Myers family was that Slate's dad Burt had a good night in both races and is now the points' leader. He's won 12 Modified titles and with 13 weeks left in the season he's in first place.

Other winners from Saturday included Billy Gregg and Zack Ore in the Sportsman races. They had the two fastest cars because they also each got a second place as they battled each other in both 20-lap races.

Winning the Street Stock races were Luke Smith, who won his fourth in a row, and Brandon Brendle.

In the Crown Vic Outlaw Super Series that paid a visit to the stadium on Saturday, Dean Levi picked up the win. Ronald Moser (Skid Race) and Brandon Johnston (Demolition Derby) also had wins.
