Diehard Skier Makes the Most of Spring in New Hampshire
At Black Mountain, New Hampshire, a seriously memorable ski season wrapped up last weekend.
The final, record-breaking outing on May 17 saw sun, slush, and, given the time of year, plenty of mud. One skier, in a social media post, documented the send-off, making the season's final turns count, even if they involved dodging a few obstacles.

Presumably, this footage was captured later in the day.
Over the weekend, Black Mountain stayed open for skiing until 7 p.m., far later than ski resorts typically do during the spring (Mammoth, for instance, is ending its late-season days at 2 p.m.). That's probably why you're seeing so much mud. Photos published by NPHR show more consistent coverage on Saturday.
"It was good until about 12," noted the skier who posted the video.
But is mud really a problem in May? As long as you have some dirt skis on hand, there's a thrill to eking out every last possible turn. And Black Mountain clearly wasn't shy about giving skiers that opportunity, if they had the guts.
The small ski area recently catapulted itself into the national spotlight after being bought by the Indy Pass in 2024. Under the new ownership, Black Mountain committed to late-season skiing. This year, that translated to a surprising April snowmaking push, and more ski days than the 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons combined.
Among unlikely-seeming resorts with extended seasons, Black Mountain wasn't alone. Boyne Mountain, in Michigan, has an enormous "glacier" built with snow guns. Only a few weeks ago, Camelback Resort, Pennsylvania, celebrated the end of its longest season ever. As is tradition, Killington continued to offer skiing this month, too, on the famed Superstar trail, with plans to make it until Memorial Day.
Looking ahead, only a few more ski resorts remain open in North America. Palisades Tahoe, California, is shooting for May 24. Mammoth Mountain, also in California, has its eyes on May 31, but doesn't have a scheduled closing date yet.
While there were plenty of ups and downs this winter-particularly for mountains out West-a small number of ski areas have hung in there, giving the diehards what they want: a few more laps under the spring sun.
