Drake, Kevin Durant Co-Star In Nike KD 19 Ad - ‘Normalize Glazing The Bros'
Kevin Durant has been drumming up interest in his Nike KD 19 sneaker since debuting the red colorway when his Houston Rockets took on the Los Angeles Lakers on March 16. A few days later, Durant tapped Texas Longhorns star forward Madison Booker to debut the “Orange Crush” KD 19 colorway in the women’s NCAA Tournament.
Wednesday, Durant and Drake co-starred in Nike’s official ad for Durant’s 19th signature sneaker, and Drake’s acting in the two-minute spot immediately overshadowed all the promo work he’d done for his newly released album, “ICEMAN.”
In it, Durant and Drake are in a locker room when the two-time NBA champion asks the Canadian rapper if he’d like to see his new shoes. Durant first whips out a heinous sneaker-cowboy boot hybrid, but Drake reacts as if Michael Jordan had just shown him his first Air Jordan silhouette.
“First thought, transcending the game,” Drake says. “Like, it’s like, you need a banjo for those. Those are crazy.”
Durant side-eyes Drake as he goes over the top with his praise, which somehow reaches another level when Durant pulls out a furry sneaker.
‘”Wow,” Drake says. “This guy’s the abominable snowman. Those are hard. This guy is trying to dominate the Alaskan market. You gotta keep the ankles warm.”
“Yo, what’s wrong with you, bro?” Durant says. “You think I would wear these? Are you even a real friend, bro? Are you a yes man, bro?”
Drake scrunches his nose and denies he’s a yes man and just wants to support his friend. Then, Durant reveals the actual new light blue KD 19 colorway, the “Candy’s.” And Drake continues to be a yes man: “The Candyman’s home! Ow. Oh, wait. Did I just get a cavity?” The ad ends with the message, “…Everyone needs a yes man.”
Drake shared the full ad on Instagram alongside the caption, “Normalize glazing the bros.”
The new KD 19 will become avaialble first via the SNKRS app on June 13 before its global release on June 17.
In a March press release, Nike described the shoe’s design as mimicking Durant’s “Slim Reaper” nickname. Read the full tactile details here.
