Grimsley baseball player, Dudley track among award winners for Metro 6A /7A spring sports
Grimsley baseball player Levi Ponder, who has signed to play at Elon, led a host of classmates who earned spring all-conference honors on Tuesday from the Metro 6A /7A Conference.
Ponder was named Baseball Player of the Year after recording a 6-3 record and a 1.86 ERA, with 72 strikeouts and 17 walks over 52 2/3 innings. He batted .462 with four home runs, 17 extra-base hits and 25 RBIs for Grimsley, who under Coach of the Year Jason Simmons went 21-6 overall, won the conference regular season title at 10-0 and reached the second round of the 7A playoffs.
The list also includes representatives from Grimsley's 7A dual team tennis state champions and doubles state champions. Yash Nain, the Boys Tennis Player of the Year, went 16-5 in singles and 10-2 in doubles and was the 7A state championship MVP.
Ragsdale's junior Ryan Hendricks received Pitcher of the Year after going 5-3 with a 2.70 ERA for the second-place Tigers.
In softball, Southwest Guilford senior Aniya Harris won Player of the Year, after batting .733 with 15 home runs, 46 RBIs and 39 stolen bases, all team highs for the Cowgirls, who went 14-10 overall, were co-regular season conference champions at 11-1 and won the conference tournament.
Ragsdale's Megan Harbaugh was named Coach of the Year after leading the Tigers to their first regular-season conference title and going 19-3 overall after a 17-0 start. Her primary pitcher, junior Gracie Jet Cuthrell, was named Pitcher of the Year, after recording a 16-3 record and a 5.83 ERA in 90 innings.
Page senior Justin White, a UNC Wilmington recruit, was boys track Runner of the Year after winning the 7A 110-meter hurdles state championship and taking runner-up in the 300-meter hurdles, while Western Guilford's Timothy Baker Jr. received Field Event Athlete of the Year, after his 6-foot, 6-inch effort in the high jump at the Guilford County Championships ranks him 19th in the state this season.
For the girls, Dudley junior Kymari Barham was named Field Event Athlete of the Year after placing second in the discus and third in the shot put at the 6A state meet, while Ragsdale freshman Taraji Jordan received Runner of the Year after winning the 6A 100 meters for the team state champion Tigers.
Also honored were Dudley's 6A boys track state champions.
The list also features the boys and girls lacrosse conferences that includes Metro teams but were adjusted for team participation within the association.
