“We are saddened to hear of the passing of longtime Astro Mark Bailey,” the Astros said in a statement. “Bailey, affectionately known as Beetle, spent over 25 seasons in the organization as a player, minor league instructor and Major League coach. We send out heartfelt condolences to Mark's family, friends and former teammates.”

Bailey was chosen by the Astros in the sixth round of the 1982 MLB Draft out of Missouri State, where he also played basketball.

Bailey played 340 games over seven MLB seasons (1984-92). A switch-hitter, he clubbed 24 home runs, drove in 101 runs, and slashed .220/.337/.337.

With the Astros, Bailey caught 64 games started by future Hall of Famer Nolan Ryan, and was behind the plate for 403 of his record 5,714 strikeouts. Only two catchers (Alan Ashby and Terry Humphrey) squatted for more innings thrown by Ryan.

The Astros traded Bailey to the Montreal Expos in July 1988 for Casey Candaele. After spending time in the Expos and New York Mets organizations, Bailey signed with the San Francisco Giants in December 1989.

Bailey played 18 games for the Giants from 1990-92, ending his major league career. After playing parts of two seasons in the independent Texas-Louisiana League in 1994-95, Bailey embarked on a coaching career that ultimately led him back to Houston.

Bailey was inducted into the Missouri State Athletics Hall of Fame in 1995, the Springfield Sports Hall of Fame in 2016, and the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame in 2017.
