Could Joey Bosa Retire From the NFL? Nick Bosa's Comments Raise Eyebrows

Joey Bosa remains a free agent as June nears, and the 30-year-old defensive end doesn’t seem to be in a rush to sign with an NFL team.

San Francisco 49ers All-Pro pass rusher Nick Bosa was asked about his older brother’s plans while meeting with the media after the 49ers OTA on Thursday.

“I think he’s working on his golf game right now, so I don’t think he’s thinking too much about football,” Bosa said.

“NFL Daily” host Gregg Rosenthal chimed in shortly thereafter, writing on X, “Joey Bosa has made a lot of money, had a lot of injuries, and faded against the run late last season. Sounds like he could just walk away.”

The Bosa brothers have been tormenting offenses since their days at St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and at Ohio State.

Joey Bosa was a two-time All-American and the 2014 Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year while playing at Ohio State from 2013 to 2015. The then-San Diego Chargers and now Los Angeles Chargers selected him with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft.

The 2016 AP Defensive Rookie of the Year played nine seasons with the Chargers and accumulated an extensive injury history - limited to 28 games from 2022 to 2024 - before the Chargers released him in March 2025.

The Buffalo Bills signed Bosa to a one-year contract the following week. Bosa recorded an NFL-most five forced fumbles, 5.0 sacks, and 16 quarterback hits in 15 regular-season games for the Bills.

If this is it for him, Bosa would walk away with 77 sacks, 96 tackles for loss, 172 QB hits, and 372 tackles (269 solo) across 107 career regular-season games.
