Dirk Nowitzki Speaks On Wings' Future With Azzi Fudd, Paige Bueckers
Dirk Nowitzki is a basketball legend thanks to spending his entire NBA career in Dallas and winning a championship with the Mavericks.
He’s since received his well-deserved induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and now lends his vast knowledge of the game to Amazon Prime, where he works as an analyst on NBA and WNBA games.
With NBC and Peacock handling the San Antonio Spurs and Oklahoma City playoff series, Nowitzki had some time to take in a WNBA game, attending the Dallas Wings’ home game against the Las Vegas Aces.
And, based on his remarks during the game commentary, he likes what he sees for the future of the WNBA team, thanks to their back-to-back draft picks.

“Incredible. Now, obviously, two cornerstones you can build around, hopefully, for the next decade. Obviously, they know each other from college, and so this is just amazing to have back-to-back No. 1 picks that now you can build around, your backcourt, your franchise for a long, long time,” Nowitzki said.
He called Fudd “fun to watch” in her first career start in the WNBA, mentioning her recent breakout performance, where she hit six 3s for the Wings.
Fudd had seemingly struggled early in her WNBA games, but had a big game against the New York Liberty, including scoring 17 points in the third quarter. She finished with 24 points to help her squad win.
Nowitzki also said that it appears Bueckers has taken a “step forward” and is getting craftier in her play on the court, so he’s certainly excited about the team’s future.
Bueckers currently leads the team in scoring, averaging 19.3 points a game, and is second in assists, averaging five per game. Fudd is the team’s fourth leading scorer with 11 points per game.
The NBA legend’s comments show he certainly likes what he sees in Dallas for the emerging WNBA team. That vote of confidence might give Fudd and Bueckers extra confidence on the court, but they seem to be doing well as he watches from afar.
And as the backcourt duo succeeds, so do the Dallas Wings. Heading into Thursday night’s game against the reigning champions, the Wings held a record of 4-3, and they moved from 10th to No. 6 in the recent WNBA power rankings.
