Can Lake Norman add to its number of boys lacrosse state titles? Wildcats earn the chance

MOORESVILLE - Eljay Schellenberg scored four goals and assisted another one as Lake Norman's boys lacrosse team defeated Weddington 12-10 in the 7A Western Regional final Wednesday night.

Junior Ethan Cominsky scored twice and assisted two goals for the Wildcats (20-6), who advanced to Saturday's 7A state championship game.

Madden Parent and Bryce Brown each supplied two goals in the victory, and Connor Mumford won 17 of 24 faceoffs.

Kayden Robles pocketed a pair of goals to go with one assist.

Ryan Tolbert made eight saves in goal for the Wildcats.

The Warriors finished the season 13-10.

Lake Norman (20-6) will face Eastern Regional champion Cardinal Gibbons (21-5) in Saturday's 7A state championship at Lenoir-Rhyne's Moretz Stadium. Cardinal Gibbons won the Eastern Regional title with its 15-6 victory over Topsail (21-5), avenging an 11-5 loss to the Pirates on March 3.

Lake Norman upended Cardinal Gibbons 11-7 earlier this season in a March 7 contest.

Saturday's 7A state championship starts at 1 p.m. It's a rematch of last year's 4A state final, which Cardinal Gibbons won 10-8.

Lake Norman is seeking its third state championship and first since 2018.
