Fever Came Painstakingly Close to Perfect 7-0 Start to WNBA Season

The Indiana Fever have started the season 4-3, but could've remained undefeated through seven games.

They entered Thursday's visit to the Golden State Valkyries on a three-game winning streak. However, the home team avenged its May 22 loss to Indiana with a 90-88 victory.

Seven points. That is the total margin of Indiana's three losses this season. They lost by two against the Valkyries on Thursday night. In their season opener, Clark and Co. suffered a 107-104 defeat at the hands of the Dallas Wings. Their second loss was on May 15 when they fell to the Washington Mystics, 104-102.

Had the Fever closed out these tightly contested affairs, they could have very well been 7-0 at this point in the season. It is also important to note that their four wins have come by a margin of eight points or more.

Caitlin Clark is back to 100% after she played only 13 games last season due to ankle, groin and quad injuries. She is averaging 22.5 points, 4.3 rebounds and 8.5 assists per game. Aliyah Boston and Kelsey Mitchell have also played well to support the two-time All-Star. The center produces 15.5 points, 7.5 rebounds and 2.7 assists, while the guard contributes 21.1 points and 2.3 assists per game.

Indiana's ominous start has sounded some alarm bells. It has one of the weakest schedules through 11 games, but does not have a dominant record to show for it. The Fever have six home games over that stretch and will play just four playoff teams from last year.

They are struggling with turnovers and tied for fourth-most per game at 15.0. While their stars produce impressive numbers, the lack of bench scoring has not helped their case.

Clark and her team will look to bounce back on Saturday when they face the Portland Fire at Moda Center. They can avoid a losing streak before the clash against Angel Reese and the Atlanta Dream on June 4.

Indiana will then play three of its next four games on the road, and getting back on track as soon as possible will be of utmost importance.
