Novak Djokovic Shows True Sportsmanship After Suffering Upset Loss At French Open
Despite suffering an agonizing loss Friday at Roland Garros, the legendary Novak Djokovic left Philippe-Chatrier with his head held high.
Many fans considered Djokovic to be the favorite to win the 2026 French Open once world No. 1 Jannik Sinner was eliminated in the second round. However, he was unable to get past Joao Fonseca in the third round.
Fonseca stormed back to a 4-6, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, 7-5 win in what was easily the best match of the tournament so far. The 19-year-old Brazilian couldn't do anything wrong down the stretch as his forehand was commanding every inch of the court.
"Ten minutes after the match I could realize a little bit what I did, what I achieved," Fonseca said. "How difficult it was and how amazing it was for me."
While there's no question Djokovic must have been disappointed by this result, he showed tremendous class after the match was over.
Djokovic posted a photo of him and Fonseca on Instagram along with a sincere message for the 19-year-old.
"An epic battle, @joaoffonseca. And a hard-fought victory you deserve. Best of luck for the rest of the tournament and the incredible career you have ahead of you," Djokovic wrote. "As for Paris… tu as mon coeur."
Fonseca replied, "Thank you, legend. It was an honor and a privilege to share the court with you."
Could this be the moment for Joao Fonseca?
Tennis fans have been eagerly waiting for Fonseca to have his big breakthrough. Maybe, just maybe, that moment has arrived at Roland Garros.
Unfortunately for Fonseca, his road ahead won't get any easier. Next up is a showdown with two-time French Open finalist Casper Ruud.
If Fonseca continues his winning ways, there's a good chance he'll face Alexander Zverev in the semifinals. That wouldn't be an easy test either.
