Serena Williams Announces Tennis Comeback at 44
Serena Williams is making a comeback.
The legendary women's tennis star, 44, is returning to the sport. Williams, one of the greatest athletes of all-time, will be competing in doubles next week at the HSBC Championships. The tournament confirmed the big comeback news on Monday morning, June 1.
"THE QUEEN RETURNS," the tournament announced on Monday morning.
"Serena Williams is BACK & set for doubles."
Williams will be playing in her first professional match in nearly four years. Williams had an iconic professional career, racking up 73 singles titles, including 23 Grand Slams. She's one of the most-decorated tennis players - male or female - of all-time.
Meanwhile, she'll return for the WTA 500 event which runs from June 8 until June 14.
Williams believes it's the 'perfect' place for a comeback
It's unclear what the future will hold for Williams following this event, but she believes it's the perfect place for her return.
"Queen's Club feels like the perfect place to begin this next chapter," Williams told the tournament. "Grass has given me some of the most meaningful moments of my career, and I'm excited to be back competing on one of the sport's most iconic stages."
WTA Tournament Director Laura Robson is pumped, obviously.
"Serena Williams is one of the greatest athletes the world has ever seen, and we're delighted that she will be making her return to tennis at the LTA's HSBC Championships. Women's tennis made a historic return to The Queen's Club last year, and now we have an icon of the game stepping back on to court at this prestigious venue - it's very exciting for the tournament and the fans."
The HSBC Championships will mark the start of grass season, following the conclusion of the French Open, as we head into Wimbledon.
All eyes will be on Serena Williams next week.
