Lando Norris, McLaren Face €30,000 FIA Punishment at Monaco GP
Just when it appeared McLaren's Monaco Grand Prix weekend was gathering momentum, the team found itself at the center of an FIA investigation that resulted in one of the most significant penalties issued so far this season.
The incident stemmed from a red-flag interruption during Friday's second practice session, when the reigning champ came to a halt at the Nouvelle Chicane. At first glance, it seemed like a routine stoppage on a circuit notorious for producing them. However, what followed behind the scenes drew the attention of FIA officials and ultimately landed McLaren in regulatory trouble.
After reviewing the circumstances surrounding the incident, stewards concluded that Norris' car had been modified in a way that compromised a mandatory safety system, resulting in a €30,000 fine for the Woking-based team. While €10,000 of that amount was suspended for 12 months, the ruling nevertheless represents a significant setback for a team fighting at the front of the grid.
FIA Finds Lando Norris, McLaren's Safety System Compromised
According to the FIA's findings, McLaren had placed transparent tape over the button used to activate the Clutch Disengagement System (CDS), a mechanism designed to allow marshals to quickly disengage the clutch when a car is stranded on track.
The system plays a crucial role during recovery operations, particularly at a venue such as Monaco, where narrow streets leave little room for delays. When Norris stopped during FP2, marshals were unable to activate the CDS as intended because of the modification.

During the hearing, McLaren admitted that the tape had been applied for aerodynamic reasons. Team representatives also acknowledged that the alteration effectively defeated the purpose of the safety device, despite arguing that the tape could still be removed manually without tools.
Stewards were unconvinced. In their verdict, they stated that the modification prevented the system from being activated quickly by marshals wearing protective gloves, directly undermining its intended function.
The penalty comes at an awkward moment for McLaren and Lando Norris, who are already under pressure to keep pace with the front-runners in Monaco. While the FIA ruling carries no sporting consequences, it has shifted attention away from the team's on-track performance during a crucial weekend.
That distraction becomes even more significant with Kimi Antonelli continuing to impress at the sharp end of the field. As rivals capitalize on every opportunity, McLaren will be eager to put the controversy behind them and refocus on the fight for valuable championship points.
