Caitlin Clark Owns Her Foul Trouble After Liberty Loss: "Just Dumb"

The Indiana Fever once again failed to build momentum, falling 83-75 to the New York Liberty on Saturday night at Barclays Center. The Fever struggled as a team, but Caitlin Clark's continued foul trouble proved especially costly.

Indiana controlled much of the game and held a three-point lead with just over six minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. However, Clark picked up her fifth foul at that exact moment, forcing her to the bench as the Liberty seized control and pulled away for the victory.

Clark finished with 10 points, seven rebounds, and nine assists, along with a plus-minus of +3. However, her shooting struggles continued as she went 4-for-14 from the field, and so did foul trouble, with Saturday marking the fourth straight game in which she committed at least four fouls.

Rather than blaming the officials, the two-time WNBA All-Star took accountability. While she acknowledged that spending more time guarding on the perimeter has contributed to her foul trouble, Clark did not hesitate to criticize some of her own decisions.

"I'm probably guarding a lot more on-ball than I have in the past few years as well, just put into more action, I'm doing my best keeping my hands out," she said.

"But there was a couple fouls that were just dumb tonight, and that's on me. I can't do those...I need to do a better job getting to the free throw line, those are easy points. Just find ways to make the refs find the same call in return on the other end."

While the free-throw disparity was significant, with the Liberty attempting 41 free throws compared to Indiana's 15, head coach Stephanie White also declined to place the blame on the officiating and instead pointed to the team's defensive shortcomings.

"We didn't help her out, we didn't plug the gaps. Some of those are rotation based, but some of them our team defensive positioning has to be better. And that can take some pressure off C[lark] if we're in the right spots," White said.

Nevertheless, Indiana had several opportunities to win the game, with White citing the team's 11 missed layups as one of the key reasons for the defeat.

Aliyah Boston, who has been one of the Fever's most consistent performers this season, struggled against New York and finished with 13 points on 6-of-15 shooting. Kelsey Mitchell once again led Indiana in scoring with 21 points, but she also had an inefficient night, shooting 7-of-21 from the field and 2-of-8 from three-point range.

The loss dropped the Fever to 5-5 on the season. They will now look to bounce back against the Washington Mystics on Monday night.
