Texas Tech QB Brendan Sorsby Declared Eligible for 2026 Season

Texas Tech Red Raiders star quarterback Brendan Sorsby will be playing the 2026 college football season after all.

Sorsby, who had previously been suspended for sports gambling, has received an injunction from a judge in Texas. Sorsby, one of the top quarterbacks in the country, has thus been declared eligible to play in 2026.

Pete Nakos of On3 reported the big news on Monday morning, June 8.

"Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby was granted a temporary injunction against the NCAA on Monday in Lubbock County Court. The court ruling allows him to play the 2026 college football season. According to the injunction, he will be suspended the first two games of the 2026 season," On3 reported on Monday.

Sorsby, who is reportedly earning north of $5 million at Texas Tech, checked into gambling rehab in mid-April. He completed a month-long stint and was diagnosed with a gambling and anxiety disorder.

The college football quarterback placed at least 40 bets on games when he was a quarterback at Indiana. According to reports, he wagered roughly $90,000 over four years. He reportedly continued to gamble at Cincinnati and Texas Tech.

Sorsby is set to play in 2026

Despite the gambling issues, Sorsby will be playing in 2026, the injunction declared.

"This court finds that applicant has demonstrated that he will suffer a probable, imminent, and irreparable injury if this court does not issue this temporary injunction because he will be unable to participate as a member of Texas Tech University's 2026 football team," the injunction states.

Texas Tech is coming off a College Football Playoff appearance in 2025-26 and has high hopes entering the upcoming season, especially now with Sorsby back in the fold.
