Phillies Facing Decision After Season-Ending News

Adolis Garcia was batting .195 with a .270 on-base percentage and a .329 slugging percentage when the Philadelphia Phillies placed him on the 60-day injured list Friday.

The veteran right fielder, who signed a one-year, $10 million deal in the offseason to replace Nick Castellanos, tore his right shoulder on a throw to the plate during Wednesday's 7-4 win against the Toronto Blue Jays. He had seven home runs and 21 RBI through 67 games. Garcia is getting another opinion to decide whether he will undergo surgery, but the reality is that he will be out for the season either way, according to Scott Lauber of The Philadelphia Inquirer.

The injury thins out an outfield that is short on right-handed depth. Johan Rojas, serving an 80-game suspension, will miss the rest of the season after tearing the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow, the Phillies announced on Wednesday. The expectation is that he will be ready by spring training in 2027.

Philadelphia, second in the National League East, now faces a critical situation in right field. The team recalled prospect Gabriel Rincones Jr. from Triple-A Lehigh Valley for his major league debut on Friday and acquired Derek Hill from the Chicago White Sox on Thursday. The left-handed hitting Rincones and the right-handed hitting Hill look to split time as platoon bats, though neither brings the experience of Garcia.

The other route runs through the trade market. A contender thin in the outfield could pursue a proven bat before the deadline rather than run the platoon all the way through the season. How aggressively the front office moves may define the Phillies' second half.
