What Happened To Kimi Antonelli At Barcelona-Catalunya GP?

Kimi Antonelli had a day to forget at the Barcelona-Catalunya GP. The Mercedes youngster had just overtaken his teammate George Russell to take the second spot in Spain. However, his efforts were wasted as his Mercedes stopped in the final stages of the grand prix.

This resulted in history being made as three British drivers finished on the podium since 1968 with Lewis Hamilton, George Russell, and Lando Norris. Also, Kimi Antonelli dropped 18 points in this race as Hamilton closes the gap with the Italian driver.

Why Did Kimi Antonelli's Mercedes Retire In Spain?

Heartbreak for Antonelli as Ferrari star closes the gap in the title race. The title race has been wide open by the victory of the British Legend.

The leading theory following Antonelli's retirement is an engine failure, although Mercedes engineers will conduct a full investigation before providing a final verdict. Some fans jokingly on social media suspect Hamilton's girlfriend Kim Kardashian's curse to play a part in Antonelli's retirement.

Modern Formula 1 power units are among the most complex pieces of machinery in motorsport, with issues ranging from internal combustion engine failures to hybrid system malfunctions capable of ending a race instantly. Antonelli's sudden loss of pace and inability to continue strongly suggested a significant technical problem rather than a minor sensor fault.

For Mercedes, the incident comes at an unfortunate time. The team has made encouraging progress throughout the 2026 season, with Antonelli emerging as one of the standout rookies on the grid. Any engine-related failure could also have implications for the team's power unit allocation later in the year.

The retirement adds to what has already been a challenging weekend for the young Italian. Antonelli received an FIA reprimand during Free Practice 3 after an incident involving Fernando Alonso, but the rookie had bounced back well before race day.

Despite the setback, Antonelli's performances this season have continued to impress Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff and the wider Formula 1 paddock. The focus now shifts to determining exactly what caused the failure and ensuring the issue does not reappear in the races ahead.
