Cubs' Seiya Suzuki Leaves Game vs. Giants with Injury

The Chicago Cubs are holding their breath with Seiya Suzuki.

The 31-year-old outfielder exited Chicago's 6-1 victory over the San Francisco Giants with right knee discomfort.

In the fourth inning, Suzuki came up short trying to catch a sinking line drive off the bat of Matt Chapman. He was immediately replaced by Matt Shaw in right field.

The injury is to the same right knee that forced Suzuki to begin the season on the 10-day injured list. He suffered a PCL sprain during the World Baseball Classic with Team Japan back in March.

Before leaving Saturday's game, Suzuki was putting together a solid all-around performance. In the first inning, he quickly tracked down a Bryce Eldridge hit in the right-field corner and threw him out at second base. Later in the third, Suzuki made a sliding catch to rob Eric Haase of a potential hit.

Offensively, Suzuki delivered an RBI single in the third inning to extend Chicago's lead to two. He finished 1-for-2 with a walk and a strikeout before exiting the game.

The potential loss of Suzuki comes at a bad time, especially since he had been breaking out of a May slump.

In 11 games this month, Suzuki owns a .306 average and .986 OPS with three home runs and nine RBIs. He is also riding a 10-game hitting streak.

Before June, Suzuki's 2026 season had been a roller coaster since making his debut on April 10. After slashing .328/.430/.567 with five homers and nine RBIs through April, he slashed a disappointing .190/.265/.286 with two homers and 10 RBIs in May.

On the season, Suzuki is slashing .255/.339/.433 with 10 home runs and 28 RBIs.

Even with that inconsistency, the Cubs can ill afford to lose Suzuki for an extended period. He and Pete Crow-Armstrong have been Chicago's two most important bats in June. His absence would place even more pressure on Crow-Armstrong to maintain his scorching stretch.

Through 11 games in June, the 24-year-old center fielder is slashing a video-game-like .383/.420/.809 with five home runs and seven RBIs. He added to his stellar June on Saturday, hitting a solo home run on the first pitch of the game.

Additional pressure would also fall on top-of-the-order hitters Alex Bregman and Michael Busch. Bregman is hitting just .171 in June, while Busch has impressed with a .308 average this month.

It remains unclear whether Suzuki will miss Sunday's series finale or be sidelined for a longer period.

Until Suzuki returns, Shaw and Michael Conforto will likely see increased playing time.

The Cubs will look to complete a sweep of the Giants on Sunday at 3:10 ET.
