Angels Make a Decision on Trey Mancini
It appears that Trey Mancini's stint with the Los Angeles Angels is already winding down.
Just over a week after the resilient infielder was called up for his first MLB action since 2023, the Angels designated Mancini for assignment on Wednesday. Angels beat reporter Rhett Bollinger previously reported that Mancini's locker was replaced by one for Vaughn Grissom; the Halos later announced that Grissom was activated from the 10-day injured list while Mancini was DFA'd as a corresponding move.

•Designated INF Trey Mancini for assignment
This decision is disappointing for Mancini, who battled through so much adversity across his MLB career. After his release from the Chicago Cubs on August 2, 2023, the 34-year-old bounced around multiple clubs but was unable to make a big league roster until his stint with the Angels. Even before this long absence, Mancini missed the entire 2020 season to undergo treatment for stage 3 colon cancer; the mental toll that the cancer treatments took on Mancini became so significant over the years that he contemplated retirement.
Mancini's best years came with the Baltimore Orioles, with whom he spent five and a half seasons. Although he was never an All-Star, he blasted 35 home runs in 2019 and 21 homers in 2021; the latter season saw him win the AL Comeback Player of the Year Award for his triumphant return from cancer. Mancini's tenure in Baltimore ended when he was traded to the Houston Astros at the 2022 trade deadline, with whom he won the World Series in October.
In five games and 14 at-bats with the Angels, Mancini recorded four RBI, three singles, a triple and a sacrifice fly. With the Triple-A Salt Lake Bees this year, he hit .273/.377/.464 with six home runs in 52 games before being called up. Over the next five days, Mancini will either be traded or placed on waivers, but given his solid production in Triple-A and in his brief return to the majors, it wouldn't hurt for another team to take a chance on him.
As for Grissom, he had been out since June 5 with a left oblique strain. The 25-year-old second baseman is currently hitting .246/.325/.410 with 10 doubles and four home runs in 155 plate appearances.
