Sonny Gray Gets Blunt on Red Sox's Dreadful Season

The 2026 season has been a nightmare for the Boston Red Sox.

After making the playoffs for the first time since 2021 last year, expectations were rightfully high in Boston. But from losing Alex Bregman in free agency to the Chicago Cubs to a slow start this year, which led the Red Sox to part ways with manager Alex Cora and a good chunk of the rest of the coaching staff, it's been a year to forget so far.

Thursday's loss to the Toronto Blue Jays may have also marked a low point of the Red Sox's season. Despite coming back from a 3-0 deficit, the Blue Jays won 4-3 to complete a sweep at Fenway Park, as Boston has now fallen to 15 games under .500 for the first time since 2015 at 29-43.

Sonny Gray, who started Thursday's game, did not mince words when he talked about the state of his team.

"I can't speak on behalf of the group, but I can speak on behalf of myself," Gray said to reporters, including Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald, after the game. "It's very frustrating. We're not good; we're just not a good team right now, and that's just a fact."

It's hard to argue with Gray, who tossed seven quality innings of three-run ball with six strikeouts against Toronto. The Red Sox have lost four straight, eight out of their last 10 and are 16 games back in the AL East standings. The right-hander was acquired from the St. Louis Cardinals in the offseason, a move that was expected to help bolster the starting rotation.

Home woes have also been a huge concern for the Red Sox. They're a major league-worst 12-25 at home and have won just two series at Fenway Park this season.

And of course, the biggest loss for Boston this year has been Garrett Crochet, who's been on the injured list since April 29 with left shoulder inflammation. There is still no timetable for his return.

It has just been a season to forget for the Red Sox in 2026, with Sonny Gray stating the obvious. Barring any summer turnaround, the Red Sox are in danger of missing the postseason for the sixth time in the last eight seasons.
