MLB Insider Names Pair of Red Sox Potential Trade Candidates

The Boston Red Sox are reeling right now.

After being swept by the Toronto Blue Jays at home, the Red Sox have lost four straight games. Their 29-43 record is better than only the Los Angeles Angels in the American League. Even more concerning, Boston is just 12-25 at Fenway Park, the worst home record in baseball.

Although the Red Sox sit only 6.5 games out of an American League Wild Card spot in a wide-open race, the outlook in Boston remains bleak.

The club's disappointing 2026 campaign has already sparked questions about whether the Red Sox will become sellers ahead of the August 3 trade deadline.

Sonny Gray and Aroldis Chapman Named Potential Trade Candidates

In a June 18 article, MLB insider Mark Feinsand identified Red Sox starting pitcher Sonny Gray and closer Aroldis Chapman as potential trade candidates.

Gray has been one of the few bright spots for Boston in his first season with the Red Sox. The veteran right-hander owns an 8-1 record with a 3.12 ERA across 13 starts.

"The 36-year-old right-hander has a full no-trade clause, but the opportunity to move to a contender could prompt Gray to approve a deal," Feinsand wrote. "Gray is in the final year of his three-year, $75 million deal, and while he has a $30 million club option for 2027, he can opt out and become a free agent if the option is exercised."

Boston's starting rotation is already dealing with significant injury issues and turnover. Garrett Crochet has not pitched since April 25 and was recently transferred to the 60-day injured list. Meanwhile, Brayan Bello is at Triple-A Worcester after being optioned on June 5 following his struggles as a starter.

Trading Gray would further weaken an already thin rotation. However, Boston could be tempted if a contender offers a substantial return.

Feinsand listed the Atlanta Braves, Milwaukee Brewers, and Chicago Cubs as potential landing spots.

Meanwhile, Chapman has continued to excel at age 38 in his second season with Boston.

Although he suffered the loss and allowed an earned run against Toronto on Thursday, Chapman has surrendered just two earned runs in 21.2 innings this season. He owns a 0.83 ERA and 0.97 WHIP across 22 appearances in 2026.

"Chapman is no stranger to summer trades; he's been dealt twice during the season (2016 to the Cubs, 2023 to the Rangers), winning the World Series in both years," Feinsand wrote. "Chapman is earning $13.3 million this season and has a $13 million mutual option for 2027 that will likely be declined, sending him back to the free-agent market."

Bullpen help is always in demand at the trade deadline, and Boston's relief corps has been among the league's best. Their 3.15 bullpen ERA ranks third in MLB. If the Red Sox make Chapman available, he would immediately emerge as the most sought-after reliever on the market.

Feinsand named the Seattle Mariners, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Chicago White Sox as potential fits for the veteran closer.

Through 72 games, the Red Sox appear much closer to selling than buying.

If Boston ultimately chooses that path, contenders are likely to inquire about several players, with Gray and Chapman among the organization's most attractive trade assets.
