Jesse Marsch Calls Out Qatar Players Following Ismael Koné Injury Incident

Canada head coach Jesse Marsch blasted the behavior of Qatar's bench after midfielder Ismaël Koné suffered a devastating broken leg during Canada's 6-0 World Cup win in Vancouver. He described their reaction to the incident as "very strange."

It was one of the greatest nights in Canadian soccer history, but it was overshadowed by a terrible injury to one of the team's most important players.

Koné was forced off during the second half after a heavy tackle from Qatar midfielder Assim Madibo. The tackle, which came from behind, initially resulted in a yellow card before being upgraded to a straight red following a VAR review.

The injury was immediately feared to be serious.

Speaking after the match, Marsch revealed members of Canada's bench heard the impact from the sideline.

"It happened right in front of our bench, and everyone heard the bone snap," Marsch said.

Medical examinations later confirmed a fractured tibia, ruling Koné out for the remainder of the World Cup and leaving Canada without one of the most important players in its midfield.

Despite the severity of the injury, Marsch stopped short of accusing Madibo of intentionally trying to hurt his player.

The Canadian coach revealed that the Qatar midfielder personally visited the Canadian dressing room after the match to apologize to Koné, a gesture Marsch appreciated. However, Marsch was far less forgiving when discussing the conduct of Qatar's bench and technical staff.

Marsh Calls Out Qatar Bench

According to the Canada boss, tensions escalated after the challenge because members of the Qatar delegation continued disputing the red-card decision and became involved in confrontations despite the obvious seriousness of the injury.

"What I found very strange was the reaction from their bench," Marsch said, criticizing attempts to challenge the referee's decision while an opposing player lay on the ground with a broken leg.

His frustration carried over beyond the final whistle, culminating in a heated exchange with Qatar head coach Julen Lopetegui.

The huge victory moved the co-hosts to the top of Group B and brought them within touching distance of a historic place in the 2026 Worl Cup Round of 32.

Yet celebrations inside the Canadian camp were muted. Koné has become one of the cornerstones of Marsch's side, providing energy, ball-winning and creativity in midfield. His absence leaves a big hole in Canada's lineup heading into the last group-stage game against Switzerland.

"It's a huge loss," Marsch admitted.
