Two area private schools swap athletic classifications starting this fall. Find out who.
The NCISAA released its classification assignments for the two-year 2026-27 and 2027-28 re-alignment cycle on Wednesday.
Greensboro Day was the only area school to move up in classification from the last cycle, rising to Class 4A after having been in 3A since the 2022-23 school year. This puts the Bengals with archrival Wesleyan Christian as the only area schools in the association's highest classification.
Meanwhile, Forsyth Country Day dropped from 4A to 3A. Those were the only two NCISAA schools in the Triad area to change in classification.
GDS has faced Wesleyan in conference play and other 4A schools in non-league competition in recent years, with the thought of preparing for the postseason.
"We are excited that our school continues to grow, especially in our lower school but know that moving to 4A in the playoffs will add an additional element to the level of competition," Greensboro Day athletics director Craig Ashley said. "Our coaches will continue to find the right balance of creating a positive and competitive environment throughout the regular season and will be ready for the NCISAA state playoffs."
The classification assignments were based on final high school enrollment numbers submitted in September 2025. Class 1A is for schools with up to 115 students, 2A for 116-185, 3A for 186-300 and 4A for 301 and up.
The association has 18 schools in 4A, 26 in 3A, 27 in 2A and 30 in 1A. Single-gender schools Christ School, Saint Mary's and Salem Academy had their enrollment number doubled for classification purposes.
Here are the classification assignments for area schools.
4A: Greensboro Day, Wesleyan Christian
3A: Calvary Day School, Forsyth Country Day, High Point Christian
2A: Caldwell, Salem Baptist, Westchester Country Day
1A: New Garden Friends, Salem Academy
