3 Triad players, 1 coach selected for 2026 East-West Girls Basketball All-Star Game

News & Record Coach of the Year John Shearin and his first-team all-area guard Samaria King are set to reunite in this year's North Carolina Coaches Association East-West All-Star Girls Basketball Game.

The 51st installment is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on July 20 at the Novant Health Field House in Greensboro.

Shearin becomes the third-ever Andrews girls basketball coach to be an assistant coach for the event. Brenda Jo Thomas and Sue Shinn were assistants in 1981 and 1988, respectively.

King, a 5-foot-8 guard, becomes the program's fourth-ever playing participant, with Aprille Shaffer playing in 1977, Candy Mikels in 1981 and Adell Harris in 1998. Shaffer, a future UNC player, had late game-tying and game-winning assists in a two-point West victory, while Harris, a future Wake Forest player, received MVP honors in another West victory.

Shearin, also a 2025-26 North Carolina Basketball Coaches Association District Coach of the Year, received the selection, after guiding the Lady Red Raiders to 21-5 overall, a Pac 7 4A/5A regular season conference title at 12-0 and a trip to the regional semifinals. His team accomplished this despite star Queens University of Charlotte signee Janiya Milligan, who was the previous season's Mid-State 2A Conference Player of the Year, missing the playoffs with a knee injury.

His Andrews teams have gone 317-80, with 11 regular season conference titles and only 12 conference losses since the start of the 2011-12 season, with his 2013-14 squad winning the program's only state championship. All 11 of those conference titles had undefeated records, with the program riding a five-season streak of undefeated conference championships.

King, a Catawba signee, received the honor after averaging a team-high 15 points, 3 rebounds, 2 steals and 1 assist as the Raiders reached a regional semifinal for the second consecutive season and for the second time in 10 years. The Pac 7 4A/5A Conference Offensive Player of the Year was also a key part of a defense that only allowed 34.3 points per game, 27.1 in conference play.

Beyond Guilford County, Kernersville Glenn's 6-foot forward Laneigh Scales, a UNC Greensboro signee, received a selection, after averaging 16.3 points on 55% field goal shooting, 14.3 rebounds, 4.2 blocks and 3.8 steals as the Bobcats finished 17-8 overall, second in the Piedmont Triad 5A/6A Conference at 8-2 and reached the 6A third round. Scales was also the Conference Defensive Player of the Year and the only Triad region girls player selected for this year's NC-SC Carolinas Classic.

Scales is Glenn girls basketball's fifth-ever girls basketball selection. The others were Janice Rhynehardt in 1988, Melanie Cobb in 1991, Lashanta Johnson in 2000 and Danielle Edwards in 2003.

Oak Grove's 5-foot-11 guard Kalin Favreau becomes the school's first-ever East-West girls basketball selection, with Ben Boulware and Eli Fulcher being picked for this December's football all-star game. Favreau was the Piedmont Triad 5A/6A Conference Co-Player of the Year, after averaging 16.8 points, 5.3 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 3.2 steals per game for the Lady Grizzlies, who went 24-1 overall, won the conference regular season title at 10-0 and reached the 5A fourth round.

The girls basketball all-star game was first played in 1975, with the East leading the series, 27-23, after winning last year's matchup, 97-85, behind Apex Friendship graduate Jasmine Nivar's MVP performance of 25 points and 11 rebounds. The East has won the last three meetings.
