Blue Jays Make Ernie Clement Announcement Before Astros Game

Toronto Blue Jays second baseman Ernie Clement has continued to become one of the more well-known and marketable players in MLB. He is one of the faces of the Blue Jays, who are fresh off a World Series appearance, and he suited up for Team USA at this year's World Baseball Classic.

The incoming recognition is for good reason. He backs it up with his play on the field. Clement is the ultimate chess piece for manager John Schneider, possessing the ability to play elite defense at three key positions on the infield.

He is also a force in the batter's box. The 30-year-old veteran has posted a .292 batting average, .311 on-base percentage, .751 OPS, seven home runs and 28 RBIs across 75 games.

Clement is starting to receive more recognition, and this year he is likely heading to his first career All-Star Game.

The Blue Jays announced an All-Star Game voting update before Monday's series opener against the Houston Astros. Given the team has the support of all of Canada, plenty of Toronto's players are leading the fan voting leaderboards at their respective positions.

That includes Clement, who is on pace to advance to Phase 2, still leading all American League second basemen in voting with 2,054,130 votes. The next closest player is not even close, as Ezequiel Duran of the Texas Rangers holds just 531,182 votes.

However, Clement is not just leading all second basemen. He is leading every American League player in voting. His total has surpassed Houston Astros designated hitter Yordan Alvarez, and he now officially sits atop the entire American League leaderboard.

This matters because if Clement remains the top vote-getter, he would receive an automatic spot on the team, bypassing Phase 2 entirely.

Part of the reason Clement is receiving so many votes is the overwhelming support from Blue Jays fans, but also because he is simply the clear choice at the position based on his performance this year.
