2 Tar Heels are All-Americans in track and field

AJ Hicks took sixth place in the men’s weight throw, and freshman Nicole Greene tied for 12th in high jump during her debut at the NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships.

Hicks, a redshirt senior, fouled his first two attempts and was sitting in last place before throwing 70-7 ¾ (21.53 meters).

Greene cleared 5-9 ¼ (1.76 meters). Her performance earned her Second Team All-American honors. Earlier this year she became the seventh woman in UNC track and field history to clear 6-0 in the high jump.

St. Augustine’s: The women, who finished sixth with 29 points, produced seven All-Americans at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships. The men finished ninth with 22 points and earned five All-America honors.

Baseball

UNC: Ron Sherman’s three-run home run was the big blow as Pittsburgh avoided its second straight sweep with a 5-0 win over No. 6 host North Carolina. . Carolina saw its 11-game winning streak snapped.

Duke: Graduate student Brian McAfee tossed his first career shutout to power host Duke to a 3-0 victory over No. 14 Virginia.

N.C. State: The No. 8 Wolfpack fell 1-0 in its series finale against Boston College at Doak Field at Dail Park. The Wolfpack loaded the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the ninth, but Boston College pitchers managed to keep NC State off the board.

Softball

UNC: Junior Kendra Lynch limited Syracuse to two hits for the second straight game as the Tar Heels defeated the Orange, 2-1, to claim the first ACC series of the season.

N.C. State: The Wolfpack concluded play in the DoubleTree RDU Challenge with an 8-0 run-rule victory against Delaware State.

Golf

N.C. State: Led by three individual finishes within the tournament field’s top 15, the N.C. State men’s golf team completed play at the 2016 General Hackler Championship Sunday in fifth place of 15 participating teams.

UNC: Joshua Martin posted a 6-under-par 66 in the final round to lead the North Carolina men’s golf team to a fourth place finish at 9-under 855 at the General Hackler Championship at The Dunes Golf Club in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Tennis

UNC: The team rebounded from its first loss of the season to earn a convincing 6-1 win at Miami. Playing at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center, the top-ranked Tar Heels improved to 16-1 overall and 1-1 in ACC play.

Wake Forest: The No. 22 Demon Deacon women could not capitalize on a doubles competition victory, falling 5-2, on the road to No. 34 Georgia Tech at the Ken Byers Tennis Complex on Sunday afternoon
