St. Aug’s runners Dill, Hutchinson break mark
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. Winner Shaquille Dill and second-place finisher Immanuel Hutchinson of Saint Augustine’s both broke the meet record in the men’s 800-meter run on Saturday, and Shawn Rowe (Jr./West Palm Beach, FL) won the men’s 400-meter seeded hurdles on the final day of the Alan Connie Shamrock Invitational Track and Field Meet at Doug Shaw Stadium.
Baseball
Wake Forest: The team dropped a doubleheader Friday to No. 10 Virginia by scores of 4-0 and 6-4 at Davenport Field.
Mount Olive: The team completed the series sweep with an 11-1 win over Southern Wesleyan University on Saturday morning at Scarborough Field in Mount Olive.
Campbell: The team belted four home runs, including two from Jimmy Monaghan, to slug its way past North Carolina A&T 14-1 at Jim Perry Stadium, clinching the nonconference series.
UNC: The team routed Duke 12-2 at Durham Bulls Athletic Park. Tyler Ramirez had two hits and three RBIs, and Carolina topped 10 runs for the fourth consecutive game in securing its fifth straight series win to open the season.
Barton: Host Barton College was swept by Erskine in a doubleheader as the Flying Fleet used two late-inning rallies to down the Bulldogs at Nixon Field.
Erskine scored three runs in the final inning of game one to secure a 3-1 win, before earning a 5-2 extra-inning win in the series finale.
Football
East Carolina: After a pair of non-contact introductory sessions, first-year head coach Scottie Montgomery and the Pirates opened another phase of their spring practice schedule Saturday with a determined and diligent hour-and-a-half workout in full pads.
Men’s Lacrosse
Duke: Junior attackman Jack Bruckner scored five goals and added two assists to lead his team to a 20-6 win over visiting Georgetown.
Women’s Lacrosse
Elon: Off a career-high matching seven points in the game by Sloane Kessler, the team cruised to a 12-6 win at Davidson.
Duke: The 13th-ranked team turned in another strong defensive performance to anchor a 7-4 non-conference victory over Villanova Saturday at Villanova Stadium.
Women’s Soccer
Raleigh Sports Club: Anson Dorrance, North Carolina women’s soccer coach, will be the guest speaker 11: 30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday. Cassidy Keith, softball student athlete from Fuquay Varina High School, will be recognized as the Student Athlete of the Week.
Meetings are held in Bradley Hall in Highland UMC, 1901 Ridge Road at the intersection of Lake Boone Trail. The cost is $15 for members and $25 for guests. Checks and cash accepted. Door Prizes and pick sheets will be available.
