ACC football updates: The latest news about fall sports during coronavirus on Aug. 14
ACC presidents met on Thursday and at first, it seemed some huge news could be coming out of it.
It turns out the phrase no news is good news remains true. There were reports out that ACC officials were meeting to determine a final answer on if the league would play football in 2020.
There was no answer yesterday, and for now, football is still on as scheduled. Earlier on Thursday Florida State president John Thrasher told the school’s board of trustees that he had “every reason to believe” a final answer would come out of the meeting, according the the Tampa Bay Times.
That report came after Florida State wide receiver Warren Thompson sent out a tweet voicing his concerns about how the school is handling the coronavirus. According to ESPN, Florida State has refused to release COVID-19 testing results.
No fall championships
Late Thursday afternoon, NCAA president Mark Emmert posted a video on Twitter announcing there will be no fall championships.
Emmert said the reason was there were not enough schools participating.
Several Division I conferences, including the Big Ten and Pac-12, have postponed fall sports. College fans are still waiting on word from the ACC, SEC and Big 12, all of whom have said they want to try and compete this fall.
The announcement by Emmert does not affect football because the College Football Playoffs are overseen by the Bowl Championship Series (BCS). But for all other Division I sports like volleyball, soccer, field hockey and other non-revenue sports, there will be no NCAA championships during the 2020 calendar year.
Emmert went on to say that his staff has been working on a solution, where those teams can compete for a championship in the winter.
