AP Top 25 college football new poll: Texas retakes No. 1 after Saturday’s spate of upsets
Well, that was something.
A Saturday filled with monumental upsets, with top 10 teams falling to unranked teams left and right, caused a drastic shakeup in the new Associated Press Top 25 poll released Sunday.
After four teams ranked in the top 10 lost on Saturday, including Vanderbilt’s 40-35 upset win over top-ranked Alabama, Texas moved up to replace the Crimson Tide at the top of the poll.
The Longhorns (5-0) were off this week and only fell from the top spot last week because voters were so impressed with Alabama’s win over Georgia.
Vandy knocked the shine off of that accomplishment and the Crimson Tide plummeted six spots to No. 7 in the new poll.
That upset was marked one of three results were unranked teams defeated top-10 teams over the weekend.
Miami only avoided adding to the chaos because it rallied from 25 points down in the second half to win 39-38 at California. The Hurricanes are No. 6 in Sunday’s poll, having jumped two spots thanks to all the upheaval.
In the new poll, Ohio State (5-0) moved up to No. 2 with Oregon (5-0), Penn State (5-0) and Georgia (4-1) rounding out the top five.
Tennessee, which lost 19-14 to Arkansas, fell four spots to No. 8 while Washington’s 27-17 win over Michigan sent the reigning national champion Wolverines (4-2) down 14 spots to No. 24.
Another top-10 team from last week, Missouri, lost to a fellow ranked team, but the 41-10 final score at No. 25 Texas A&M caused voters to severely punish the Tigers. Missouri fell 12 spots to No. 21.
Just outside last week’s top 10, Southern Cal stumbled and lost 24-17 at unranked Minnesota and the Trojans (3-2) dropped from No. 11 completely out of the rankings.
Two other ranked teams who lost last week, Louisville and UNLV, also fell out of the rankings.
SMU, which beat Louisville 34-27, joined the poll at No. 25. Syracuse beat UNLV, 44-41 in overtime on Friday night. The Orange received votes but did not crack the top 25.
Pittsburgh (5-0), after being second among teams receiving votes who didn’t make the rankings last week, moved into the poll at No. 22 this week.
Pitt and SMU give the ACC four ranked teams, with No. 6 Miami and No. 10 Clemson among the top 10.
Syracuse and Louisville were the only other ACC teams to receive votes.
