ACC Tournament what to know for Wednesday’s games in Charlotte

The in-state vibe grows stronger as the ACC Tournament’s second round of games arrives on Wednesday at uptown Charlotte’s Spectrum Center.

No. 7 seed N.C. State (19-12) looks to end its four-game losing streak when it plays No. 15 seed Pittsburgh at noon. That’s the start of four games on the schedule.

Here are three things to know about the tournament’s second day:

  • N.C. State desperately needs this win to soothe its bruised NCAA Tournament resume. Despite having lost six of their past seven games, the Wolfpack are in good shape to make the field of 68. But a loss to No. 15 seed Pitt (13-19) puts N.C. State in danger of a First Four game in Dayton prior to the first round.
  • Another ACC team working to play its way into a better spot in the NCAA Tournament field is No. 11 seed SMU. The Mustangs (20-12) took care of 14th-seeded Syracuse, 86-69, on Tuesday and face No. 6 seed Louisville (22-9) Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. Louisville and SMU split their two regular-season games, with each winning on their home court.
  • The night session features three teams with no NCAA Tournament hopes, short of winning the tournament and gaining the automatic bid, in No. 8 seed Florida State (17-14), No. 9 seed California (21-10) and No. 13 Wake Forest (17-15). FSU and Cal play at 7 p.m., with the winner advancing to play No. 1 seed Duke on Thursday. Wake and Clemson play the fourth game of the day. No. 5 seed Clemson (22-9) is firmly in the NCAA Tournament.
